What is AI GEO and why should you care now?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) decides whether your brand appears in ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity answers. Here is how it works and where to start.

The short answer

AI GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the set of methods that help a brand, product or expert appear and be cited in the answers of generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini and AI Overviews, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot or Claude.

What has changed in search?

In a traditional search engine the user gets a list of results and decides which page to click. Generative AI engines instead give a ready-made answer: they summarise the topic, recommend a few providers and, ideally, cite their sources.

For companies this means two things:

  1. There is less room. An AI answer typically mentions only a handful of brands. If you are not one of them, you are invisible at the moment of decision.
  2. The ranking logic is different. Language models do not simply match keywords; they also weigh how clear, credible and quotable the content is.

How does an AI “decide” whom to mention?

There is no single public algorithm, but practice and research keep pointing to a few factors:

  • Entity recognition: how clearly the model understands who you are, what you do and which topics you relate to.
  • Credible sources: whether your brand appears on industry sites, in the press, in comparison articles and on review platforms.
  • Quotable content: concise definitions, concrete data and well-structured answers the model can easily reuse.
  • Technical accessibility: whether AI crawlers can access your content, whether you provide structured data (Schema.org) and an llms.txt summary.
  • Freshness: systems using real-time search (e.g. Perplexity or ChatGPT search) favour up-to-date content.

The authors of the 2023 academic paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” found that adding citations, quotations and statistics to content can significantly increase visibility in generative answers – by up to around 40% in their experiments.

Where to start?

1. Measure your baseline

Before changing anything, you need to know where you stand. Compile 20–50 questions your potential clients would ask (e.g. “Which accounting firm in Budapest is best for small businesses?”) and check how different AI platforms answer them.

2. Make it clear who you are

Provide a clear, concise introduction on your website; use Organization and Service structured data; and keep your company details consistent everywhere.

3. Write quotable content

Answer common questions directly, in the first sentence. Use headings, lists, tables and verifiable data with sources.

4. Build an external presence

AI systems often cite third-party sources. Industry articles, interviews, curated lists and reviews all strengthen your brand’s footprint.

5. Measure regularly

GEO is not a one-off project. AI models and their sources change constantly, so visibility should be measured regularly – at least monthly.

Summary

AI GEO does not replace SEO, it complements it: the goal is the same – being found – but the AI answer takes the place of the results list. Those who start measuring and building deliberately today can gain an edge over those who only notice the change when enquiries start to drop.
